Mexico City: Political Struggle Between Mayor and Morena Intensifies

The mayor of Mexico City deepened his rift with Morena, accusing the party of authoritarianism. In response, 4T supporters claim the mayor is trying to evade responsibility for alleged misconduct. Tensions are rising ahead of the 2027 elections.

Mexico City: Political Struggle Between Mayor and Morena Intensifies

In recent months, a series of tensions have occurred that foreshadow what may happen, including allegations against the mayor for financing his wife and current local deputy, Laura Álvarez's, mayoral campaign, as well as criticism of his administration due to crimes linked to organized crime that occurred in the jurisdiction.

This Tuesday, the mayor deepened his differences with Morena by leading the "For Freedom" meeting, held in coordination with the Christian Democratic Organization of America (OCDA) and the Casla Institute. At the event, the PAN party member compared Morena to the governments of Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua, accusing them of governing with authoritarian practices.

Meanwhile, supporters of the Fourth Transformation (4T) allege that he is trying to avoid responsibility to evade questions about alleged permits for irregular construction and the unclear use of public funds.

Rojo de la Vega and Morena clashed again at Donceles, and polarization is growing.

"I'm not afraid, but I am concerned about the 'noroñization' of politics, this degradation where everything becomes a circus," the mayor stated, adding that he might present his report and demands for next year's economic package without appearing before the relevant committees or answering questions from the 4T.

Following this, Mauricio Tabe, the mayor of the second-largest district, is now doubting whether to go to the Palace of Donceles to fulfill one of his duties as mayor of the capital.

At a press conference, the mayor expressed "concern" about what might happen during his appearance, given the recent precedent set by his counterpart in Cuauhtémoc, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, who was intercepted and criticized by figures from Morena. They accused her of financing the mobilization of Generation Z at the capital's Zócalo.

In 2027, the ruling coalition in CDMX will put a significant portion of its electoral efforts into winning two mayoralties currently held by the opposition: Cuauhtémoc and Miguel Hidalgo.

Tensions have already arisen over the first of these, causing intense moments during her appearance before the local Congress.

Meanwhile, Tabe is threatening to do the opposite and face the possible criticism.

Andy reports that Morena could define the gubernatorial candidacies in June.

At its core, this possible scenario at Donceles hides the political dispute between Tabe and Morena over the 2027 elections, where the "purple" party will try to regain the district it once governed.

However, the mayor attended Donceles despite the prior tension and responded to the accusations.

If this were to happen, Tabe would be the first and only mayor in all of CDMX to act in this manner, bypassing protocol, as Rojo de la Vega, Giovani Gutiérrez, Carlos Orvañanos, and Luis Mendoza all submitted to questioning.

As reported by LPO, the mayor of Cuauhtémoc, Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, was confronted by various figures from the 4T, who accused her of financing the mobilization of Generation Z that generated violent images in CDMX.

"Our people will awaken to stop this authoritarian advance in our country," she assured and added: "The loss of freedom is not far off".
